FRESPACE Board Members do more than attend meetings. For example, Vice President Lisa Cumming is on the Turtle Patrol at Edisto Beach State Park. She, together with other patrol members, look for turtle tracks on the beach to find their nests. If necessary, they move turtle nests above the high tide line so the eggs don’t wash away. They keep an egg from each nest to use for DNA research. The DNA can tell us if that momma turtle visited us in the past, and much more.
Lisa like so many other Edistonians, volunteers are trained and permitted by state and federal agencies to conduct these nest monitoring activities – MTP545 under the leadership of Turtle Specialist, Leah Schwartzentruber.
